The Hallikar is a renowned indigenous cattle breed from Karnataka, India, highly valued for its exceptional draught power and endurance. Originating from southern districts like Mysore, Mandya, and Tumkur, the breed is named after the Hallikar community, known for their cattle-rearing traditions. Medium-sized and muscular, Hallikar cattle typically have white to light grey coats, long backward-curving horns, a prominent forehead, and a well-developed hump in males. Primarily used for agricultural work, Hallikar oxen are famous for their ability to work long hours and cover considerable distances while pulling loaded carts over rough terrain. Though not a major dairy breed, Hallikar cows yield about 542 kg of milk per lactation with a fat content of around 5.7%. Traditionally fed on green fodder like finger millet and grass, they thrive under semi-intensive management systems. The breed holds cultural importance in Karnataka, having received royal patronage and national recognition, and it is considered the progenitor of other South Indian draught breeds like Amrit Mahal. Conservation programs by the Karnataka government aim to preserve the breed’s purity and unique qualities.
